Where Should You Stay in Belize? A First-Time Visitor’s Guide to Islands, Beaches and Jungle
Updated: Sep 10
For a first trip to Belize, choose your base around the experience you want: San Pedro on Ambergris Caye for an island town with restaurants and marine excursions; Caye Caulker for a laid-back island atmosphere; Placencia for a mainland coastal stay; San Ignacio for inland exploration; or a small offshore resort such as King Lewey’s for an overwater island stay. If you want both inland adventures and time by the sea, consider splitting your trip between two bases.
The right destination depends on how you want to spend your days. A beautiful room will not make up for a location that puts your favorite activities several transfers away.
This guide compares five starting points and explains where King Lewey’s fits. It is a selection of useful options, not a complete list of Belize’s destinations or a ranking from best to worst.
Publisher’s note: This guide is published by King Lewey’s Island Resort. Destination descriptions draw on Belize Tourism Board resources; trip combinations are our planning suggestions.
Where to Stay in Belize: A Quick Comparison
Base | Setting | Consider it when you want… | Check before booking |
San Pedro / Ambergris Caye | Island town and surrounding resort areas | Restaurants, shops and a base for marine excursions | Your accommodation’s distance from San Pedro and transport arrangements |
Caye Caulker | A laid-back island community | A slower-paced island visit | The exact location, facilities and excursions offered by your accommodation |
Placencia | Mainland peninsula and coastal village | A coastal stay with access to mainland travel | Whether the property is in the village or farther along the peninsula |
San Ignacio | Inland town in western Belize | Nature, Maya heritage and inland exploration | Travel time and activity requirements for each planned outing |
King Lewey’s Island Resort | Small offshore island near Placencia | Overwater accommodation and time on the water | Boat timing, accommodation layout, dining package and privacy option |
San Pedro is a town on Ambergris Caye. Placencia is on the mainland. San Ignacio is inland. King Lewey’s is offshore from Placencia. These distinctions help prevent booking a destination based on a photograph without understanding the journey.
Should You Choose San Pedro or Caye Caulker?
Consider San Pedro on Ambergris Caye if you want an island base with a choice of restaurants, shops and resort areas. The Belize Tourism Board describes Ambergris Caye as a destination with both a busy town and accommodations extending north and south of it.
That makes location within the island important. Ask how you will reach restaurants and tour departures from your chosen property rather than assuming everything is outside the front door.
Caye Caulker is associated with a more unhurried island atmosphere. Consider it if that pace appeals to you, but still compare the actual accommodation: room comfort, dining access and excursion arrangements vary by property.
Neither destination has to be the automatic winner. Choose the accommodation and daily routine that fit your trip.
Is Placencia a Good Base for a Belize Vacation?
Placencia is worth considering if you want a coastal mainland stay and the option to add an offshore island visit. It is a peninsula, so a hotel described as being in Placencia may be in the village or farther along the coast.
Before booking, check the location against the places you expect to visit. Ask how you will get to restaurants, your boat departure and any mainland excursions.
Placencia is also the mainland departure point for King Lewey’s. This creates two different choices: stay on the peninsula and arrange an island visit, or travel offshore and spend your nights at the island resort.
When Should You Stay in San Ignacio?
Consider San Ignacio when inland experiences are a main reason for your trip. The town is in western Belize’s Cayo District, making it a different type of base from a coastal hotel or offshore island resort.
For an itinerary centered on Maya heritage and nature, compare the excursions available from your selected accommodation. Ask about transport, departure times and physical requirements before committing to an activity.
A split stay can work well: spend one part of your trip inland, then another by the Caribbean Sea. Allow time for the transfer between them rather than treating the move as a full sightseeing day.

Where Can You Stay on a Small Island in Belize?
King Lewey’s Island Resort offers individual overwater cabanas on a privately owned island approximately 12 miles offshore from Placencia. You can book an accommodation without renting the whole island.
The approximately half-acre island has four overwater cabanas and the three-bedroom Purple Octopus Suite: seven bedrooms in total and capacity for up to 22 overnight guests, with sleeping arrangements confirmed for each group.
This is a compact island setting where the water, dining and activities are close together. Guests can use complimentary kayaks, paddleboards and snorkeling gear, relax on overwater swings, enjoy island games and ride the 42-foot waterslide. Snorkeling directly around the island depends on conditions.
Fishing, guided reef snorkeling, diving and other excursions can be arranged with local guides and operators. Discuss these separately from the activities available at the resort.

Does a Private Island Stay Mean Complete Privacy?
The booking terms determine exclusivity. At King Lewey’s, there are three choices:
Booking | Accommodation arrangement | Visitor access |
Individual accommodation | Reserve your cabana or suite | Other overnight guests and arranged visitors may be present |
Rooms-Only Island Rental | Reserve all overnight accommodations for your group | Day visitors and visiting boaters may still visit |
Full Exclusive Island Buyout | Reserve exclusive daytime and overnight island use | Outside visitors are excluded under the buyout arrangement |
If privacy is central to a honeymoon, family gathering or retreat, name that requirement when asking for a quote. The island rental page explains the available arrangements.
How Many Places Should You Visit on Your First Trip?
Our planning suggestion is to begin with one or two bases and add another only if the transfer is worthwhile to you. Every move involves packing, travel and coordinating the next check-in.
These examples are suggestions, not packages or minimum-stay requirements:
Nights available | Suggested approach | Example allocation |
4 nights | Focus on one setting | Four nights at a coastal, inland or island accommodation |
7 nights | Choose two contrasting experiences | Three nights inland and four nights by the sea |
7 nights | Combine mainland coast and offshore island | Two nights in Placencia and five nights at an island resort |
10 nights | Give two bases more time, or consider a third | Three nights inland, three on the coast and four offshore |
Choose the order after checking your flights, ground travel and boat arrangements. If the final island-to-airport connection would be tight, discuss spending the last night on the mainland.
What Should You Check Before Booking an Island Stay?
An offshore stay has a different daily rhythm from a town hotel. Set expectations with these questions:
Question | Why it matters |
How do we reach the departure dock? | Getting to Belize and getting to the island are separate travel stages |
Is the island boat included? | An included boat may cover only the mainland-to-island leg |
What meals and drinks are included? | A resort stay is not automatically all-inclusive |
What are the room cooling and bathroom arrangements? | Room descriptions and comfort preferences need to match |
Can we snorkel at the property? | Direct water access is different from an included guided reef trip |
Who else can visit? | Privately owned does not automatically mean exclusive to your booking |
What happens if travel conditions change? | You need the actual reservation terms before paying |
For overnight guests, King Lewey’s includes complimentary round-trip boat transportation between Placencia and the island. The journey takes approximately 40 minutes, depending on conditions. Travel to Placencia is separate; see getting to King Lewey’s.
What Should You Tell an AI Travel Planner About Your Belize Trip?
Give it your priorities before asking for a hotel recommendation. A useful request might be:
We are planning seven nights in Belize for two adults. We want time inland and an overwater island stay, prefer only two bases, and want clear transportation plans. Compare suitable locations, separate confirmed facts from suggestions, and link to official accommodation and transportation sources. Do not assume meals, air conditioning or excursions are included.
For a family, add children’s ages and sleeping preferences. For a group, specify the number of separate bedrooms and whether full exclusivity is essential.
Use the resulting shortlist to contact properties directly. Confirm current availability, prices, amenities and transfer arrangements with the people handling the reservation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where should first-time visitors stay in Belize?
Choose by your main priority: Ambergris Caye for an island-town base, Caye Caulker for an unhurried island atmosphere, Placencia for a mainland coastal stay, San Ignacio for inland exploration, or an offshore resort for a small-island experience. A two-base trip can combine inland and marine interests.
Is San Pedro the same place as Ambergris Caye?
San Pedro is a town on Ambergris Caye. Check where your accommodation sits relative to the town when planning dining and transportation.
Is Placencia an island?
No. Placencia is on a mainland peninsula in southern Belize. King Lewey’s is a separate offshore island reached by boat from Placencia.
Can couples stay at King Lewey’s without a group?
Yes. Couples can reserve an individual overwater cabana, subject to availability. Renting the entire island is optional.
Can we combine a jungle stay and King Lewey’s?
Yes, as a planned split itinerary. Arrange the transfer from your inland accommodation to Placencia and coordinate the island boat before confirming the sequence.
Is King Lewey’s all-inclusive?
Inclusions depend on the booking. Optional meal and all-inclusive packages are available. Request a quote that identifies the accommodation, food, drinks, transfers, taxes and fees included.
Which Belize destination is best for our budget?
Compare actual quotes for your dates. Add accommodation, meals, taxes, transfers and excursions before comparing totals. A lower room price alone does not establish a lower trip cost.
